Wildfires continued to rage across southwestern France and parts of Spain as firefighters battled to contain fast-moving flames fueled by strong winds and extreme heat. In France, the fires advanced toward the city of Bordeaux, with officials warning that the blaze remained far from under control.
More than 300,000 people have been evacuated from the Gironde and Landes regions, with an additional 55,000 residents ordered to leave their homes on Saturday. Across the border in Spain, a state of emergency remains in effect, although improving weather conditions have aided firefighting efforts near Madrid. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez warned that "complex times" still lie ahead.
Authorities in Valencia also confirmed the death of a man believed to be in his 70s, who was found inside his car after a wildfire. Emergency crews continue working to contain multiple blazes as dangerous conditions persist across the region.
