The US Supreme Court has ruled that babies born in the United States are entitled to birthright citizenship under the Constitution, rejecting President Donald Trump's effort to end the long-standing policy.
In a 6-3 decision, Chief Justice John Roberts stated that children born in the US to parents who are unlawfully or temporarily present are citizens at birth under the 14th Amendment. The court reaffirmed that the Constitution guarantees citizenship based on birth within the country.
Trump had attempted to restrict birthright citizenship through an executive order, arguing that children born to undocumented immigrants and certain temporary visa holders were not fully "subject to the jurisdiction" of the United States and therefore should not automatically receive citizenship.
The ruling marks a significant setback for Trump's immigration agenda and preserves a constitutional principle that has been in place for more than 150 years. Civil rights organizations welcomed the decision, calling it an important affirmation of constitutional protections.
