Typhoon Narra has left a trail of destruction across northern Vietnam and China's Guangxi region, unleashing floods and landslides that have wrecked infrastructure and farmland. Torrential rain accompanying the storm forced Chinese authorities to evacuate roughly 54,000 residents, with over 8,000 of them moved into emergency shelters as water levels surged.
Vietnam has been hit even harder in human terms — the relentless downpours have claimed one life and forced more than 4,300 households from their homes. The mountainous northern provinces of Lang Son and Cao Bang bore the brunt, recording rainfall between 236mm and 300mm within just a single 24-hour stretch ending Monday morning, which triggered widespread flooding and landslides.
Although Narra has been hovering over the Gulf of Tonkin (also called the Beibu Gulf), forecasters say it isn't expected to make landfall. Even so, it will continue dumping heavy rain across the north in the days ahead.
