Torrential floods in the Himalayan border regions of Nepal and China’s Tibet killed at least nine people on Wednesday, destroying roads, bridges and power infrastructure as authorities warned of further casualties and damage.
In Nepal, floodwaters swept away homes, roads and vehicles, while several villages were reportedly engulfed. Rescue helicopters were unable to land in the affected areas of Syapru Besi and Timure in Rasuwa district, where the river rose well above its normal level.
Across the border in Tibet, authorities reported a mudslide near a major land crossing in Gyirong county and warned of potentially heavy casualties, with several people reportedly missing.
Television footage showed damaged homes, floating vehicles and a metal bridge being swept away by powerful floodwaters. Rasuwa district administrator Narendra Pariyar urged residents living near the Bhote Koshi River to move to higher ground as emergency teams assessed the damage.
