A 16-year-old rookie lifeguard is being praised after rescuing a 10-year-old boy who was swept offshore at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz, California. Bystander video captured the dramatic rescue as Ryder Williams swam to the child, who had drifted about 15 yards (13.7 meters) into the ocean. Several beachgoers also joined the rescue effort, which was completed in just over two minutes.
The boy was safely brought back to shore without further incident. Williams' quick response and bravery have drawn widespread recognition. In honor of his heroic actions, President Donald Trump has invited the teenage lifeguard to the White House, where he is set to receive a high civilian award recognizing his courage and lifesaving efforts.
