Taiwan President Lai Ching-te and senior government officials took part in an emergency drill on Wednesday to prepare for a possible “decapitation strike” targeting the island’s political leadership. Lai and members of his staff were transported by armored personnel carrier from their offices in Taipei to a fortified command center near the Defense Ministry, according to the presidential office.
The exercise was designed to test how Taiwan’s government would maintain operations during a potential attack or crisis targeting its leadership. Officials reviewed command structures, coordination between government agencies and emergency-response procedures to ensure national security could be maintained.
Government footage showed an armored vehicle traveling through Taipei streets as part of the drill. Lai was also seen wearing a protective vest, receiving briefings and issuing instructions at the command center.
The exercise comes amid heightened security concerns surrounding Taiwan and was intended to strengthen the government’s ability to respond quickly during a major national emergency.
