A Chinese humanoid robot has reportedly demonstrated remarkable speed, sprinting at more than 20 mph on a track in Beijing.
Footage shows the full-size bipedal machine racing down the track without visible safety cables or a harness, displaying movements that closely resemble those of a human athlete.
The demonstration highlights the rapid advances being made in humanoid robotics, particularly in high-speed balance and movement. Unlike walking, running requires both feet to leave the ground, with foot-contact times dropping below 100 milliseconds.
To maintain stability during such rapid movements, the robot’s joint actuators must continuously adjust torque at extremely high speeds. Engineers have made significant progress in developing machines capable of running without falling, a major milestone compared with just a few years ago.
Experts say solving high-speed balance could eventually help humanoid robots navigate rough terrain through software and control-system improvements.
