Meteorologists say soaring temperatures combined with high humidity will create dangerously high heat index values across dozens of states, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
Health officials are urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day, wear light clothing, and seek air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. People are also encouraged to check on elderly family members, young children, and others who are especially vulnerable to extreme heat. The prolonged heat is expected to increase electricity demand as millions rely on air conditioning during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
