Two people were killed after two firefighting helicopters collided during wildfire operations in western Greece on Saturday. The victims were identified as a Danish pilot and a Greek Fire Service liaison officer. According to Greek authorities, the second helicopter managed to make an emergency landing, and its two crew members, a British pilot and a Greek crew member, escaped with minor injuries before being taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The tragic accident occurred as emergency teams battled multiple wildfires that have spread across several parts of the country amid extreme weather conditions. Greek Prime Minister expressed his deepest sorrow over the loss of the two responders, paying tribute to their dedication and sacrifice in protecting lives and communities. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also offered condolences, praising the bravery of firefighters and pilots who risk their lives by flying directly into dangerous wildfire zones. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the mid-air collision.
