Thousands of football fans poured into the streets of Buenos Aires on Wednesday night after Argentina secured a dramatic 2-1 victory over England to book their place in the FIFA World Cup final.
The winning goal came from Lautaro Martínez two minutes into stoppage time during the semifinal in Atlanta, sending defending champions Argentina into Sunday's final against Spain.
Supporters celebrated across the capital, waving Argentine flags, singing chants, honking car horns, and setting off fireworks. Despite the pouring winter rain, many fans danced through the streets, while others climbed lampposts and traffic signals draped in the country's blue-and-white colors. Some were overcome with emotion, shedding tears as they embraced fellow supporters.
The city's iconic Obelisk became the center of the celebrations as thousands gathered in a sea of joy. "Look around at all these strangers, jumping and dancing together," said Rosana Beto Cruz, a 48-year-old Catholic nun celebrating alongside the jubilant crowd.
