Liberian authorities have destroyed approximately 4.2 metric tons of cocaine valued at $336 million, days after announcing the country's largest-ever drug seizure. The narcotics were burned as investigators expanded their probe into what officials described as a sophisticated international trafficking network.
Police Inspector General Gregory O.W. Coleman said several senior law enforcement officers have been implicated in the case, including the chief of highway patrol and the head of major crimes, both of whom have been charged. A deputy police commander stationed at Liberia's main airport is also under investigation for allegedly assisting in the movement of the cocaine after it entered the country.
The drugs were recovered during a raid on a property in Duazon, about 28 kilometers from the capital, Monrovia. Authorities also arrested a Serbian national and a dual Colombian-Spanish citizen, who remain in custody as investigators continue to uncover the network behind Liberia's biggest drug bust.
